Set in the heart of rural Devon, Town Farm is a haven for birds and wildlife. We regularly hear & see tawny owls, we have installed an owl box in our woodland to encourage them.

But one of our most special residents is a group of bats — four different species call Town Farm home. From May to October, they roost in our roof spaces and outbuildings, and if you're here around sunset, you may catch the magical sight (and sound) of them emerging for their night-time feeding flights.

The bats return to their roosts in the early hours of the morning, usually between 2 and 3am.

The attic of The Granary serves as a maternity roost, where pregnant bats give birth and raise their young. On warm summer evenings, you might be lucky enough to witness the young bats taking their first flights around the courtyard — a quiet, enchanting moment that’s a true privilege to observe.
